PROXY is Hayes Valley’s magical public plaza. Let’s make it permanent.

Supervisor Dean Preston calls this space “dormant” and is lining up developers to build on the site. Hayes Valley is a leader in affordable housing with better opportunities for development nearby. We deserve really great public space, too.

We are a community of concerned residents who believe this shortsighted effort will deeply undermine one of the best public spaces in the city. Keeping PROXY is urgent, now.

What’s happening to PROXY?

PROXY is the open plaza space at the corner of Hayes and Octavia streets, adjacent to Patricia’s Green (aka Hayes Park). PROXY was created in 2010 as a temporary activation of the lot known as “Parcel K,” which was one of many carved out of a former freeway right-of-way and designated for eventual development.

The city’s intentions for Parcel K have never changed, despite 15 years of incredible popularity and activity in this public space. District supervisor Dean Preston, along with the Mayor’s Office of Housing, are working hard to issue an RFQ (Request for Qualifications) for developers to build housing on the site, erasing the plaza permanently, in return for only fifty apartments.

Housing is crucial in San Francisco. Hayes Valley has already built over 550 affordable homes (including six 100% affordable developments!) in our neighborhood since 2010, with more on the way today. Yet there are still large former freeway parcels that remain vacant or underused by the city. Let’s build even more housing there.

There is simply no good reason to take away PROXY, the small, cherished and busy neighborhood amenity, reducing the quality of neighborhood public space in the process.

We want to stay in touch the folks who are passionate about this issue so we can show strength in numbers. So few neighbors are even aware of this issue! (Don’t worry, your info will only be used to contact you for PROXY-saving-related purposes). Thanks!!
